COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The creation of the Rock ‘n Roll Orchestra came from the desire of our string and guitar instructors to have an orchestral ensemble play music that is usually not played by typical orchestras.  We asked, what would happen if we took an orchestral ensemble and wrote and played Rock n’ Roll, or Pop, or Country Music?  We also asked, what would happen if we added electric guitars, drums, electric bass, to an orchestral ensemble and then wrote versions of classical music in an upbeat, Rock ‘n Roll style.

Well in the summer of 2008 we answered these questions when we conducted our first Rock ‘n Roll Orchestra Season.  It was a resounding success!  At the end of the summer, the Rock ‘n Roll Orchestra performed 2 public concerts.  More importantly, each musician in the Rock ‘n Roll Orchestra experienced music in a totally new way.

The Laurel School of Music has committed to return the Rock ‘n Roll Orchestra for the Summer of 2009.  We also, will have another program in the Fall (separate course) called Rockin’ Christmas Orchestra.

Our Summer 2009 program consists of the following:

·        9 one hour and a half group sessions

·        An end of summer Rock Concert

·        Music specifically written for the level of musician

·        An absolutely fun and inspiring learning experience

SKILL LEVEL

Although we accept students of every skill level, we do ask that musicians have at least 1 year of instrument playing or instruction.  The musicians of a certain musical section will be divided generally into two or three skill levels.  For instance, the Violins will be grouped in sections designated Violin !, Violin II, and or Violin III.  The difficulty level of the music will progress from difficult to easier, with Violin I being the most difficult.

The staff of the Laurel School of Music conducting the Rock ‘n Roll Orchestra hand writes the music for each individual musician and section.  This allows us to ensure that each musician is given music they can master and enjoy.  Each musician is encouraged to attempt music that may challenge their skill and comfort level.  Most importantly, we will not “force” a musician to tackle music beyond their skill or comfort level.

VACATION DAYS /MISSED REHEARSALS:

There will be no refunds or credits for Student who miss rehearsals.  There will be a scheduled Vacation from July 3 through July 5 due to the July 4th Holiday.

Consideration is taken into account that students will often have vacation absences.  Because a performing group must have as many members present as possible for each class, if a member cannot attend a class for various reasons, instructors may step in and play the missing students part. This allows a continuity of rehearsal.

Also, if a group of students is missing a key part (for example if a particular group does not have a bass player, instructors will play and perform the bass guitar part).

Although we do not have a set attendance policy, we do ask each musician to attend as many rehearsals as they can and master their individual musical tasks.  As long as the musician is contributing well to the overall group effort, we do not set a strict attendance structure.  However, the instructors will not take any extra time or effort for musicians who have fallen behind in learning their music because of absences.

If a musician’s mastery of certain musical pieces is not of a level that can contribute to the concert performance due to absences, the musician may be asked to “sit out” that particular song.

COURSE POLICY WITHDRAWAL PROVISIONS:

An Application/Registration fee of $25 is required to hold a spot for this program.  The registration fee will be refunded according to the Provisions Below

BEHAVIOR:

The Rock ‘n Roll Orchestra Summer Program is a group class.  The instructors are committed to give quality guidance and instruction to every member of the group.  We expect each member of the group to act in an appropriate manner that respects the other members of the group and supports the goals of learning and performance preparation.

Behavior by ENSEMBLE members that is deemed disruptive, rude, IS DETRIMENTAL TO THE LEARNING PROCESS OF OTHER ENSEMBLE MEMBERS, or socially unacceptable will be addressed as follows:

One initial notice will given to the student and the parents or guardian.  This notice will include a meeting with the instructors, parents, guardian AND musician.  If after the first notice and meeting the student is asked or decides to withdraw, the Tuition (but not the Registration Fee) will be refunded if no more than 1 rehearsal has been attended.

If AFTER the initial notice and meeting (both notice and meeting must have been given) AND more than 2 rehearsals have been attended – AND the disruptive behavior does not cease, the student will be asked to withdraw and THERE WILL BE NO REFUND OF TUITION OR PORTION OF TUITION.

PUBLIC PERFORMANCE

The ultimate goal of the Summer Band/Orchestra program is to prepare the student for public performance.  Each Band will be scheduled for a public concert performance the weekend of August 22-23.  The exact time and date of the concert will be decided at a later date.
